A poll conducted by Newsru.co.il among its website visitors revealed significant differences in the voting patterns and demographics of recent immigrants, referred to as the "pumpkin aliyah," compared to the general survey participants. The poll, which concluded on October 27th, involved 4,385 participants, including 336 immigrants who arrived between 2022 and 2026, representing approximately 8% of the total.
The survey indicated that recent immigrants were, on average, 11.5 years younger than other respondents, with a mean age of 47.5 compared to 59. They reported lower Hebrew proficiency but comparable levels in other languages and slightly higher overall education. Additionally, this group was less observant of Jewish traditions, more likely to be unmarried and childless, and had a slightly lower average gross monthly income of 12,000 shekels versus 13,800 shekels for the general respondents.
Recent immigrants also showed a lower proportion of pensioners and a higher concentration in the "Haifa and Northern Israel" region (38% versus 29% overall). Furthermore, only 4% of this group had served in the IDF, significantly less than the 18% average among all participants.
Politically, 49% of the "pumpkin aliyah" identified as centrists, compared to 36% of the general respondents. Right-wing identification was lower among immigrants at 28%, versus 51% overall, while left-wing identification was higher at 11% compared to 5% overall.
In terms of voting choices, the "Democratim" party, led by Yair Golan, received 21% of the vote among recent immigrants, significantly higher than the 7% average. "Yisrael Beiteinu," led by Avigdor Lieberman, garnered 19% among immigrants, slightly below the 27% average. "Bayahad," led by Naftali Bennett, received 19% from immigrants, compared to 17% overall. "Yashar," led by Gadi Eisenkot, was chosen by 18% of immigrants versus 12% overall. The "Likud" party, led by Benjamin Netanyahu, received only 9% of the immigrant vote, substantially lower than the 20% average. Other parties received lower percentages among this demographic.
Newsru.co.il emphasized that the voluntary nature of the poll means its results are not statistically representative of the entire Russian-speaking electorate in Israel, and the stated margins of error do not reflect actual inaccuracies. The outlet hopes the findings will foster dialogue rather than conflict.
