  • Israel faces political uncertainty after elections with no clear majority, awaiting President Herzog's decision on government formation.
  • U.S. President Trump's support for PM Netanyahu is viewed with suspicion regarding potential deals on Iran and Israeli government formation.
  • Some Israeli "change bloc" figures fear Netanyahu might provoke conflict with Iran to stay in power.
  • Gadi Eisenkot rejects any unity government proposal and threatens resignation if pursued.
  • Most exit polls show no bloc securing an absolute majority, with Arab parties performing strongly.
  • President Herzog awaits Netanyahu's response on a pre-trial agreement concerning his legal cases.

Israel is entering a period of political uncertainty following Tuesday's Knesset elections, with official results not expected until November 4. Central Elections Committee head Noam Solberg will present the results to President Yitzhak Herzog, who will then consult with parliamentary factions to decide whom to task with forming a government. Typically, the mandate goes to the candidate with the most recommendations.

Adding to the political ambiguity is a tense security situation, particularly concerning Iran. U.S. President Donald Trump, who has previously pledged not to attack Iran before the U.S. midterm elections on November 3, has shown support for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu through social media posts. Some figures in the "change bloc" fear Trump might leverage the Israeli election's lack of a clear winner to further aid Netanyahu. These sources also speculate that Netanyahu might provoke a confrontation with Iran to complicate government formation and maintain power, potentially pushing for an emergency government that could include Gadi Eisenkot, leader of the Yashar party.

Eisenkot has strongly rejected any such unity government proposal, threatening resignation if one is pursued. Sources close to the White House suggest Trump's stance is influenced by Netanyahu's alleged promise to form a national unity government. The Israeli opposition believes Trump's supportive posts are a quid pro quo for Netanyahu delaying action against Iran.

Most exit polls indicate no bloc secured an absolute majority in the Knesset, with the exception of Channel 14's polls suggesting a 62-seat advantage for Netanyahu's bloc. A significant factor is the strong performance of Arab parties, which preliminary data shows winning 18 seats. This fragmented outcome points to significant political challenges ahead, as the change bloc's narrow lead of one to two seats is precarious and subject to vote count changes.

President Herzog has been cautious about discussing a national unity government, possibly reserving the option if coalition talks stall. He has also yet to receive a response from Netanyahu regarding a pre-trial agreement proposal aimed at resolving the prime minister's ongoing legal cases.
