Channel 14 Faces Legal Challenge Over Election Night Broadcast

A petition was filed with the Central Elections Committee on Tuesday against Channel 14, demanding an immediate injunction against its special broadcast of the flagship program "HaPatriotim" (The Patriots). The broadcast is scheduled to air at 9:00 PM, just one hour before the official closing of polling stations nationwide.

The petition stems from a promotional campaign and video released by the channel, titled "An hour before everyone: The Patriots leak the exit polls." Petitioners argue this signals an intent to publish premature voting data, violating election laws and potentially influencing voters who have not yet cast their ballots, particularly those near the electoral threshold.

Unusually, the petition seeks to block the broadcast even if the channel intends to present satirical or humorous segments rather than actual exit poll data. The petitioners contend that any presentation of such data before 10:00 PM could mislead the public and break the law. They are requesting an urgent injunction and legal costs.

The legal action was initiated by the "Academia for a Democratic Israel" association, a public and legal organization comprising senior academic staff from various higher education institutions. The association, which emerged from academic protests against legislative initiatives and the political crisis in Israel, has been active in filing legal proceedings to uphold the rule of law, separation of powers, and public service independence.

In response to the petition, the Chairman of the Central Elections Committee, Supreme Court Justice Noam Sohlberg, has ordered Channel 14 to submit its response by 12:00 PM. A final decision has not yet been made. Channel 14 vehemently denied the allegations, stating, "We reject the attempt to silence HaPatriotim even before its broadcast." As of now, the special broadcast, hosted by Yinon Magal, is expected to proceed as planned at 9:00 PM from the International Convention Center in Jerusalem.
