Director Carl Rinsch Sentenced to 30 Months for Defrauding Netflix of $11 Million

Carl Rinsch, the director known for the film "47 Ronin," was sentenced on June 29, 2026, to 30 months in prison for defrauding Netflix of $11 million intended for a sci-fi series production. The Manhattan federal court judge, Jed Rakoff, imposed a sentence half as long as the prosecution requested, citing mitigating evidence about Rinsch's mental health, including character references from actor Keanu Reeves and others.

In December, a jury convicted Rinsch of fraud and money laundering after it was proven he diverted funds meant for the unfinished series into cryptocurrency investments and luxury car purchases, including five Rolls-Royces. Rinsch admitted in court, "I made a mistake," and acknowledged the process forced him to confront personal issues he had never fully understood.

Rinsch's defense team withheld mental health evidence during the trial but presented it at sentencing, revealing he had been under inadequate medical care during the project and has since undergone treatment. Judge Rakoff noted Rinsch's unusual spending and behavior indicated a manic state beyond typical greed, possibly exacerbated by medication misuse. Keanu Reeves, who befriended Rinsch during the "47 Ronin" production, wrote a character reference highlighting Rinsch's struggles and prior rejection of professional help.

The prosecution argued Rinsch repeatedly showed contempt for the law by seeking additional Netflix funding despite access to a trust fund and wealthy industry contacts. The judge ordered Rinsch to pay $11 million in restitution, participate in mental health treatment, and avoid narcotics. Netflix representatives stated the company would leave it to the court to decide on recovering the stolen funds, with the judge acknowledging Netflix likely will not recoup the full amount. Rinsch is scheduled to begin his prison term on September 1. Judge Rakoff concluded that despite his crimes, Rinsch remains a talented individual who may find ways to use his skills after release.
