Director Karl Rinsch Sentenced to Prison for Defrauding Netflix of $11 Million
Karl Rinsch, director of the film "47 Ronin," was sentenced on June 29, 2026, to 30 months in prison for defrauding Netflix of $11 million intended for a sci-fi series production. The federal judge in Manhattan, Jed Rakoff, imposed a sentence half the length requested by prosecutors, influenced by evidence of Rinsch's mental health struggles presented after the trial, including character references from actor Keanu Reeves.
In December, a jury convicted Rinsch of fraud and money laundering after it was proven he diverted funds meant for the unfinished series into cryptocurrency investments and luxury car purchases, including five Rolls-Royces. Rinsch admitted in court, "I made a mistake," and acknowledged the process forced him to confront personal issues he had not fully understood before.
Rinsch's defense team withheld mental health evidence during the trial but later submitted it for sentencing, revealing he had been under inadequate medical care during the series production and has since undergone treatment. Judge Rakoff noted Rinsch's unusual behavior, including extravagant spending, as signs of a manic state beyond typical greed. Keanu Reeves, who befriended Rinsch during "47 Ronin," wrote a character letter describing efforts to support Rinsch's mental health, which Rinsch initially rejected.
The prosecution argued Rinsch repeatedly disregarded the law by seeking additional Netflix funding despite access to a trust fund and wealthy industry contacts. The fraud also harmed the careers of many actors and crew involved in the project. Besides prison, Rinsch must pay $11 million in restitution, attend mental health treatment, and avoid narcotics. Netflix representatives indicated the company will leave recovery decisions to the court but likely will not recoup the full amount.
Rinsch is scheduled to begin serving his sentence on September 1. Judge Rakoff expressed belief in Rinsch's talent and potential for future contributions post-incarceration but emphasized that Rinsch knowingly chose to commit the fraud and conceal it for years.
