Flu Season Arrives Early, Ministry Urges Vaccinations Amid Severe Cases

A 17-year-old girl with no prior health conditions, unvaccinated against the flu, is hospitalized in intensive care at Assuta Ashdod Hospital, sedated and on a ventilator due to complications from the illness. The Ministry of Health has urged the public to get vaccinated, noting that this year's flu season began earlier than usual.

Influenza is a viral respiratory illness caused by types A, B, and C viruses, with type A responsible for most seasonal cases. While a common cold is typically mild, the flu can lead to severe complications, hospitalization, and even death, particularly among at-risk groups. However, even healthy young individuals can experience significant illness and complications.

Professor Tal Brosh, Director of the Infectious Disease Unit at Assuta Ashdod, explained that flu complications arise from two main mechanisms. Firstly, the flu virus weakens the respiratory system's defenses against bacterial infections, leading to secondary bacterial infections like sinusitis or pneumonia. Secondly, the virus can directly damage the lungs, causing severe viral pneumonia that is difficult to treat. Other potential complications include inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis) and brain (encephalitis), which can manifest in young people with symptoms like seizures or altered consciousness.

The flu vaccine is not a guaranteed preventative measure against infection but significantly reduces the severity of illness and the risk of hospitalization or death. Most hospitalized patients are unvaccinated individuals. Dr. Rivka Shafer, Director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Assuta Ashdod, emphasized the importance of vaccination, especially for children, noting that many severe pediatric flu cases occur in unvaccinated children.

The Ministry of Health recommends vaccination for everyone six months and older, particularly pregnant women, individuals over 65, and those with chronic illnesses. As of October 18th, only 4.9% of the general population had been vaccinated, with the lowest vaccination rates among teenagers. Experts stress that it is not too late to get vaccinated, as the flu season is just beginning and the vaccine takes about two weeks to become effective, offering protection for the majority of the season.
