Israel's Ministry of Health has issued a public appeal for flu vaccinations as the winter flu season has begun earlier than usual this year, affecting Israel and other countries. Data indicates a high rate of virus detection among hospitalized patients. The ministry emphasized that while the flu vaccine does not offer complete protection, it significantly reduces the risk of severe illness or death and helps alleviate symptoms in most cases. The vaccine is available free of charge at health maintenance organizations (HMOs) and is recommended for everyone aged six months and older, particularly pregnant women, individuals over 65, and those with pre-existing medical conditions.

Dr. Rivka Sheffer, District Health Officer for Tel Aviv, stressed the severity of the flu, calling it a contagious disease that can be serious and life-threatening. She stated in a video accompanying the announcement that the flu vaccine is the best way to reduce complications and mortality, citing studies that suggest it can cut the risk of death from the disease by up to half. She urged the public to get vaccinated now, as protection begins about two weeks after administration, making it the optimal time to seek immunization for personal and loved ones' safety.

The ministry's warning comes in the wake of a concerning case where a 17-year-old girl with no prior medical conditions was hospitalized in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Assuta Hospital in Ashdod due to flu complications. She was admitted with a severe infection and a dangerous drop in blood pressure, and her condition deteriorated rapidly within hours. Hospital officials noted that she had not been vaccinated against the flu.
