  • Haifa surgeons saved an IDF soldier's kidney after a severe injury sustained in Lebanon.
  • The soldier's kidney function was compromised by a blocked main renal artery.
  • Doctors removed a blood clot and used a stent to restore blood flow to the kidney.
  • The soldier was treated with a minimally invasive procedure and discharged in stable condition.
  • The successful outcome was attributed to rapid transport, accurate diagnosis, and swift medical intervention.

Surgeons at Haifa's Rambam Medical Center successfully saved the kidney of an IDF soldier injured during an operation in Lebanon. The soldier fell from a significant height, landing on a metal object that penetrated his soft tissues. He was urgently airlifted to Haifa and immediately treated by Dr. Hani Bachus, head of the Trauma Service.

Diagnostic scans revealed a complete blockage of the main renal artery, halting blood flow to the kidney. According to Dr. Igor Kogan, head of the Invasive Radiology Department, kidney tissue is highly sensitive to oxygen deprivation, similar to brain tissue, and lacks alternative blood supply routes. Specialists Dr. Amos Ofer and Dr. Maria Dronova from the Invasive Radiology Department quickly intervened.

They located the damaged area, removed a blood clot, and implanted a stent to restore the vessel's normal diameter. Post-procedure ultrasound confirmed the full restoration of blood flow. The soldier has completed the initial treatment phase and has been discharged in stable condition, with a final assessment of the kidney's function expected after several weeks of follow-up.

Medical staff emphasized that the positive outcome was due to a coordinated effort: rapid helicopter transport, precise diagnostics, and swift, minimally invasive intervention using catheters under imaging guidance, avoiding open surgery. Rambam Medical Center also announced the opening of a new operating room in its Invasive Radiology Department this week, enhancing its capacity for emergency procedures.
