Doctors at Haifa's Rambam Health Care Campus successfully saved the kidney of an Israeli soldier who sustained a severe injury during a military operation in Lebanon. The soldier was performing a combat mission in Lebanon when he fell from a significant height, landing on his back and striking a metal object. The impact was so severe that the object penetrated deep into his soft tissues.
He was urgently airlifted to Rambam Hospital, where he was treated by Dr. Hani Bahous, head of the trauma department. A CT scan revealed a blockage in the main renal artery, completely cutting off blood flow to the kidney. Dr. Igor Kogan, head of the invasive radiology department, explained the critical nature of the situation, noting that kidneys, unlike some other organs, lack alternative blood vessels and can suffer irreversible damage quickly without sufficient blood supply.
Specialists from the invasive radiology department, Dr. Amos Ofer and Dr. Maria Dronova, immediately recognized the urgency. Working against the clock, they located the blockage, removed a blood clot, and inserted a stent into the renal artery to keep it open and restore blood flow.
Subsequent ultrasound examinations confirmed that the artery remained open and the kidney was receiving normal blood supply. The soldier has since been discharged from the hospital in stable condition. Dr. Kogan stated that further observation is needed over the next few weeks to ensure full recovery of kidney function. He emphasized that the soldier's kidney was saved due to the immediate helicopter evacuation, rapid diagnosis, and timely intervention by the medical team.
The invasive radiology department at Rambam utilizes advanced technologies like ultrasound, CT, and X-ray for minimally invasive procedures, treating various conditions and injuries without open surgery. This includes opening blocked vessels, stopping internal bleeding, and treating tumors. The department recently opened a new catheterization operating room, adding to its existing two.
