Israel's Ministry of Health has updated its travel recommendations for citizens due to a significant Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The ministry advises against travel to affected provinces within Congo, including Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uele, Tshopo, Bas-Uele, Sud-Ubangi, and Nord-Ubangi. Non-essential travel to other parts of Congo and its bordering countries is also discouraged. These neighboring nations include Uganda, South Sudan, the Central African Republic, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, Angola, and the Republic of Congo.
For travelers planning trips to Kenya and Nigeria, the Ministry of Health recommends reconsidering the necessity of their travel. If travel to these countries proceeds, individuals are urged to seek personalized advice at a travel clinic before departure, adhere to precautions detailed on the Ministry of Health's website, and stay informed about local health authority guidelines.
The Ebola virus spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids and secretions of infected individuals or deceased persons, contaminated objects, or infected animals. It is not airborne. The incubation period ranges from 2 to 21 days, with symptoms including fever, headache, muscle pain, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Individuals who have been in Ebola-affected areas and develop a fever of 38 degrees Celsius (100.4 degrees Fahrenheit) or higher, or other unusual symptoms within 21 days of their visit, are instructed to stay home, avoid contact with others, and immediately call the Health Ministry's hotline at *5400 for guidance. They are cautioned against going to a medical facility without prior coordination, and must disclose their travel history to an Ebola-affected region when they call.
