Israel's Ministry of Health has updated its travel recommendations, urging Israelis to reconsider plans to travel to Africa due to an ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The outbreak in the DRC has resulted in over 9,800 confirmed cases and at least 4,750 deaths.
While the primary concern is the DRC, recent cases have also been reported in Kenya and Nigeria, though community transmission is not currently known in these countries. For those planning trips to Kenya or Nigeria, the ministry advises assessing the necessity of the travel. Travelers who proceed are encouraged to seek personal consultation at a travel clinic before departure, adhere to the ministry's safety guidelines, and follow local directives.
Travel to specific regions within the DRC, including Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uele, Tshopo, Bas-Uele, Sud-Ubangi, and Nord-Ubangi, is strongly discouraged. For other parts of the DRC, non-essential travel is not recommended.
Furthermore, the ministry advises against non-essential travel to countries bordering the DRC, including Uganda, South Sudan, the Central African Republic, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, Angola, and the Republic of Congo.
Ebola is transmitted through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected individuals or those who have died from the disease, as well as through contaminated objects or infected animals. Symptoms can include fever, headaches, muscle pain, vomiting, and diarrhea, with an incubation period of 2 to 21 days. The ministry has provided specific instructions for returning travelers: if fever of 38 degrees Celsius or higher or unusual symptoms develop within 21 days of visiting an affected area, individuals should self-isolate and avoid contact with others. They are instructed to call the Health Ministry's hotline at *5400 and coordinate any medical attention, informing healthcare providers of their travel history.
Israel's healthcare system is preparing for potential suspected cases, with medical teams receiving professional guidance, protective equipment being procured, and laboratory testing capabilities being established. The ministry will continue to monitor the outbreak and update the public as developments occur.
