A 17-year-old girl with no pre-existing conditions is hospitalized in serious condition at Assuta Hospital in Ashdod due to a severe complication from the flu. The hospital reported on Monday that the teenager had not yet been vaccinated against the flu. She arrived at the hospital early Monday morning with a severe infection and dangerously low blood pressure. Her condition deteriorated rapidly within hours, first in the emergency department and then in the pediatric intensive care unit. She is currently sedated, on a ventilator, and receiving medication to support her blood pressure.
Dr. Noa Rosenfeld, director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Assuta Hospital, emphasized that the flu is not always a mild illness and can lead to life-threatening complications even in young people without prior health issues. She highlighted the case as an illustration of the importance of flu vaccination in significantly reducing the risk of severe illness and hospitalization.
The Ministry of Health noted that Israel, like other countries, is experiencing an earlier-than-usual flu season with a high rate of flu virus detection among hospitalized patients. While the vaccine does not guarantee complete protection, it generally lessens the severity of the illness and significantly reduces the risk of severe outcomes or death. The ministry urges the public to get vaccinated, stating the vaccine is safe, recommended for ages six months and up, and available free of charge through health maintenance organizations.
Data from the National Center for Disease Control indicates a continued rise in flu cases. In the week ending October 17, 82 new positive flu cases were reported in 14 general hospitals, predominantly Type A influenza. Flu-like illness referrals are also increasing in the community across most age groups. Since the start of the flu season until October 17, 359 confirmed flu hospitalizations have occurred, including 285 adults and 72 children. Seventeen patients, 13 adults and 4 children, have been admitted to intensive care. As of October 18, 480,332 individuals (4.9%) had been vaccinated against the flu, with the highest vaccination rate among those 65 and older (19.2%) and the lowest among 13-18 year olds (1.2%).
