A 17-year-old girl with no prior medical conditions is hospitalized in serious condition in the pediatric intensive care unit at Assuta Ashdod Hospital due to a severe complication from the flu. Her condition deteriorated rapidly after arriving at the hospital early in the morning. She is currently sedated, on a ventilator, and receiving medication to support her blood pressure.
According to the hospital, the teenager arrived at the emergency department suffering from a severe infection and a dangerous drop in blood pressure. Within a few hours, her condition worsened significantly, first in the emergency department and then after being transferred to the pediatric ICU. Medical staff were forced to sedate and ventilate her, and she is receiving drugs to maintain blood pressure.
The hospital noted that the girl had not been vaccinated against the flu. Dr. Noa Rosenfeld, director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Assuta Ashdod, emphasized that severe flu complications can occur even in children and teenagers without underlying health issues. "The flu is not necessarily a mild illness, and children and teenagers without prior conditions can develop severe and life-threatening complications from it," she stated.
Dr. Rosenfeld also highlighted the importance of flu vaccination, suggesting it could significantly reduce the risk of severe illness and hospitalization. "This case illustrates the importance of getting vaccinated against the flu, which can significantly reduce the risk of severe illness and hospitalization," she added.
