The last remaining beachfront homes on Tel Aviv's "Metzitzim Beach," a site immortalized in Israeli culture, are being demolished, marking the end of an era that began in the late 1950s. The Tel Aviv District Court recently approved a settlement agreement for the Orr family, one of the last families to reside on the sand, to vacate their home within six months. The family will receive 2.2 million shekels in compensation, with half a million immediately placed in trust to assist with finding a new residence.

The settlement follows a protracted legal dispute. The Orr family claimed they had purchased the property rights years ago and invested heavily in its upkeep due to the corrosive sea air, relying on the authorities' long silence. Conversely, the Israel Land Authority and the Tel Aviv Municipality argued that the family's residency was unauthorized and that they had illegally rented out parts of the property, generating approximately 96,000 shekels annually in rental income. The Land Authority had sought over 9.2 million shekels in usage fees.

This agreement comes after a lower court's ruling last year that the structures must be vacated by June 2026, as the family could not prove ownership of the land. The compensation, funded by public money, is in addition to payments made to four other families previously removed from the area. One final family's case is still pending legal resolution.

The Tel Aviv Municipality stated that clearing the area is essential for public benefit, as the land is designated for expanding the adjacent parking lot, increasing beach area, and creating a continuous promenade from Tel Aviv Port to Hilton Beach.
