Israeli scientists from the Weizmann Institute found that menopause causes sharp changes in almost all bodily systems, starting up to 10 years before the final menstrual period. Analyzing over 300 million tests from a million women, they identified significant shifts in bone, liver, kidney, and cholesterol levels. The study, published in Nature Medicine, suggests an extended period for preventative health measures.

Scientists at Israel's Weizmann Institute have discovered that menopause is not a gradual decline but a sharp, systemic shift affecting nearly all bodily functions. Analyzing over 300 million medical tests from more than a million women in the U.S. and Israel, the research, led by Professor Uri Alon and published in Nature Medicine, indicates that significant changes begin up to ten years before a woman's final menstrual period. Traditionally viewed as a slow process, menopause marks a critical turning point impacting not just reproductive health but also bone density, liver and kidney function, and cholesterol levels. The study utilized extensive data from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and Israel's Clalit Health Services, covering decades of medical records. Researchers found drastic shifts in 52 out of 90 tested parameters across nearly all bodily systems. These changes were not observed in men of the same age and were less pronounced in women undergoing menopausal hormone therapy. The accelerated hormonal shifts preceding menopause were detected more than a decade prior to the final period, earlier than previously understood. The study employed a novel algorithm, inspired by astronomical image processing, to overcome the challenge of varying ages of menopause onset in large datasets. The findings suggest an expanded window for preventative measures, such as diet and exercise, to mitigate health risks associated with menopause. Professor Alon noted that the developed "astronomical" method could also be applied to studying other major life transitions like puberty or pregnancy.
