Israeli airline Arkia has stopped selling tickets to Marrakech, Morocco, due to heightened security concerns following an attempted terror attack on a Flydubai flight. The airline is reviewing the future of the route and has not yet offered solutions to passengers with existing bookings. This decision mirrors a similar move by Israir and comes amid a broader security review of flights to Israel.

  • Arkia has suspended ticket sales to Marrakech, Morocco, due to Israeli security directives.
  • The decision follows an attempted terror attack on a Flydubai flight in late September.
  • Arkia is evaluating the continuation of its Marrakech route and the status of existing tickets.
  • Israir previously halted ticket sales and expansion plans for its Marrakech service.
  • The security concerns are prompting a review of safety protocols for flights to and from Israel.

Following a recent attempted terror attack on a Flydubai flight, Israeli airline Arkia announced on Wednesday that it is suspending ticket sales to Marrakech, Morocco, until further notice. The decision, made at the request of Israeli security officials, comes amid heightened security measures after the September 30th incident. Arkia is also evaluating the future operation of the route, which it had resumed in August.

While Arkia has not canceled existing bookings, the halt in new sales leaves passengers who have already purchased tickets in uncertainty. The airline is in discussions with relevant authorities and security bodies to determine the feasibility of continuing the flights and to address implications for already sold tickets. One possibility being explored is operating the flights through Arkia's commercial partners if Israeli authorities decide to cease operations by Israeli airlines to Marrakech, though details on this alternative remain unclear.

The move by Arkia follows a similar decision by Israir eight days prior, which also stopped selling tickets to Marrakech and froze plans to expand its service there. Israir had intended to increase its weekly flights from one to three starting in November but has now halted this expansion and paused negotiations for an additional aircraft lease.

The security concerns stem from the attempted hijacking of a Flydubai plane en route to Israel, where the co-pilot allegedly tried to crash the aircraft. This event has prompted Israeli security agencies to review and tighten security protocols for flights to and from Israel, particularly concerning foreign aircrew background checks.

This situation is not the first instance of uncertainty for Arkia passengers recently. The launch of its direct route to Tokyo was postponed due to issues with a wet lease arrangement, leading Arkia to offer alternative flights, destination changes, or full refunds to affected passengers. However, no similar solutions have yet been offered for the Marrakech flights as Arkia continues to assess its operational capabilities.
