  • Dietitians advise removing gummy candies, sugary drinks, sweetened cereals, and processed meats from homes.
  • Gummy candies contain sugar and artificial colors that may worsen hyperactivity in children.
  • Sugary drinks are a primary source of excess sugar for children, increasing risks of obesity and heart disease.
  • Sweetened cereals cause blood sugar fluctuations linked to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.
  • Processed meats like sausages are ultra-processed, high in fat and sodium, and linked to cancer and heart disease.

Dietitians recommend removing four types of food from homes to maintain health and weight. These include gummy candies, sugary drinks, sweetened breakfast cereals, and processed meats like sausages and cold cuts.

Gummy candies, according to dietitian Karin Leibovitz, contain sugar and artificial additives that can worsen hyperactivity in children with ADHD. She advises choosing products with natural food coloring if consumption is permitted occasionally.

Limor Tal Poni, Chief Dietitian at Maccabi Healthcare Services, emphasizes eliminating sugary drinks, especially for children. She cites recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association, which advise avoiding added sugar for toddlers and limiting it to 25 grams daily for older children. Replacing these drinks with water is crucial for preventing obesity and cardiovascular disease.

Shir El-Alfi-Zagar, a clinical dietitian, explains that sweetened breakfast cereals cause rapid blood sugar spikes and subsequent crashes, leading to hunger and potentially increasing the risk of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. She suggests balancing them with protein-rich yogurt and nuts to mitigate these effects.

Dr. Olga Raz, a clinical dietitian, categorizes processed meats like sausages and cold cuts as ultra-processed foods. They contain numerous additives, high levels of saturated fat (up to 40% in cold cuts and 20% in sausages), and excessive sodium. Dr. Raz warns that their consumption increases the risk of cancer, heart disease, obesity, and fatty liver, and are particularly discouraged for individuals with diabetes and hypertension. She advises against keeping these items at home, suggesting that occasional treats should be consumed outside the home to prevent overconsumption.
