Iran views the coming weeks as critical and is seeking to increase pressure on Washington, partly through more frequent attacks in the Strait. Two Iranian officials indicated that the leadership believes the period before the U.S. midterm elections on November 3 is key to influencing the American president. Some Iranian leaders reportedly aim to politically punish President Donald Trump in the election, drawing a parallel to the 1980 Iran hostage crisis that impacted President Jimmy Carter's reelection campaign. These officials spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of diplomatic contacts.
