Vance says U.S. and Iran will set up direct military channel in Qatar

U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance said Wednesday evening that Washington and Tehran have agreed to create a direct military communication channel in Qatar. The arrangement would bring together a Revolutionary Guards officer and a U.S. Central Command officer, according to comments he made in an interview titled "The New U.S. Relations with Iran."

Vance said, "We agreed with the Iranians that a Revolutionary Guards officer and a U.S. Central Command officer will sit together in Qatar. That way we will settle many of our conflicts." He presented the step as a practical mechanism for reducing friction between the two countries.

He also said Gulf states are in contact with Iran. In his words, the United Arab Emirates, which he described as "the most pro-Israel country in the Gulf," is holding talks with Iran on an unprecedented scale, including with the Revolutionary Guards.
