במסגרת מבצע "מגן וחץ", חיל האוויר הישראלי חיסל את בכיר הג'יהאד האיסלאמי, חאלד מנג'וד, בתקיפה אווירית מדויקת שבוצעה בשעות הלילה המאוחרות. מנג'וד, שהיה אחראי על גיוס פעילים ועל תכנון פיגועים, שהה בביתו בעת התקיפה. התקיפה בוצעה לאחר הערכת מצב ואיסוף מודיעין מקיף, שמטרתו הייתה למנוע פגיעה באזרחים. על פי גורמים ביטחוניים, מנג'וד היה מעורב בתכנון פיגועים נגד יעדים ישראליים, וחיסולו מהווה פגיעה משמעותית ביכולותיו של הארגון. הג'יהאד האיסלאמי אישר את מותו של מנג'וד, אך לא התייחס לאחריותו לפיגועים עתידיים. התקיפה מהווה חלק מהמאמץ המתמשך של ישראל לסכל פעילות טרור ולהגן על אזרחיה.
