Saudi Oil Pipeline Attacked; Trump Blames Iran

The story · English

A strategic Saudi oil pipeline was temporarily shut down after being hit by drones launched from Iraq, escalating regional tensions. The pipeline, known as East-West, connects oil fields in the kingdom's east to the Red Sea coast, allowing Saudi Arabia to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, a vital and potentially volatile waterway. Saudi authorities reported damage to the infrastructure and some casualties, though the full extent of the damage is still being assessed. Iraqi officials confirmed the drones originated from their territory and have launched an investigation.

Saudi Arabia has decided not to retaliate immediately, at the request of Baghdad, which has pledged to prevent its territory from being used for attacks against neighboring countries. The Iraqi government welcomed Saudi Arabia's decision and committed to ensuring its borders are not used for such purposes.

U.S. President Donald Trump pointed the finger at Iran for the attack on the Saudi pipeline, stating, "I think Iran was behind it. I'll tell you, probably yes." This accusation comes amid ongoing maritime incidents in the region.

Separately, an Iranian ship was attacked near Qeshm Island, resulting in one death and several injuries. The British Maritime Trade Operations also reported an attack on a vessel in the southern Strait of Hormuz, near Oman. These incidents follow earlier reports of explosions in the area.

Regional diplomatic efforts are underway concerning freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Bahrain has stated it will not participate in meetings with Iran unless full freedom of navigation is guaranteed and relations between the two countries are normalized.
