Saudi Arabia Confirms Drone Attack on Strategic Oil Pipeline
Saudi Arabia has confirmed that a drone attack, launched from Iraq, struck multiple points along its strategic oil pipeline. The pipeline, stretching over 1,200 kilometers, is crucial for the kingdom's oil exports as it bypasses the Strait of Hormuz. Satellite imagery reportedly shows smoke rising from one section of the pipeline.
The attack, which temporarily halted oil flow and caused unspecified damage, occurred amid significant advances by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. According to Reuters, citing maritime tracking data and analysts, the pipeline transports between 4% and 5% of the global oil supply. Saudi Arabia stated it would not respond immediately to the attack, following a request from the Iraqi Prime Minister, and pledged to support Iraqi government efforts to prevent further attacks originating from its territory.
However, the kingdom reserves the right to take all necessary measures to protect its sovereignty, security, and citizens. Iraq's Prime Minister's office announced that an operations commander in Maysan province, bordering Iran, was dismissed after it was confirmed the drone attack originated from that area.
The Houthi takeover of the Bab al-Mandab strait, another vital shipping lane, has heightened concerns. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman reportedly urged US President Donald Trump twice to intervene directly against the Houthis, but Trump declined. US officials stated there are no current plans for direct intervention in the Yemen conflict.
