Vizhnitz Rabbi's Son Urges Prayers Amid Father's Health Struggles

Thousands of Vizhnitz Hasidim gathered late Saturday night for the first Selichot prayers of the season, led by their spiritual leader, the Vizhnitz Rebbe. Shortly before the Rebbe's appearance, his eldest son, Rabbi Chaim Meir Hager, the Av Beis Din (head of the rabbinical court) of Vizhnitz, delivered a powerful address to the assembled masses.

Rabbi Hager openly discussed the complex medical treatments his father is undergoing, urging the Hasidim to intensify their prayers for his recovery. He emphasized that while all Jews are obligated to pray during these days of mercy, Vizhnitz Hasidim have an additional duty to pray for their Rebbe, who has been battling an "unexpected guest" for two years.

He highlighted three key points: the necessity of prayer for their ailing leader, the visible signs of divine providence and open "gates" for advanced medical intervention, and the proven power of Jewish prayers to effect change and ease the Rebbe's burden. Rabbi Hager described his father's complete faith and detachment from the outcomes of his treatments, noting that the Rebbe relies solely on God after fulfilling his part in seeking medical help.

Drawing a parallel to a story about a man stuck in mud, Rabbi Hager explained that the Rebbe endures his suffering not for himself, but for the community, to inspire them to repent and draw closer to God. He implored the Hasidim to pray for the Rebbe's swift and full recovery so he can lead them with renewed strength.

Following the address, the Vizhnitz Rebbe, wrapped in a tallit (prayer shawl) inherited from his grandfather, led the Selichot service. After the prayers, the Hasidim engaged in soulful melodies, with the Rebbe encouraging their singing.
