New York Mayor Adams Confronted Over Israel Stance in Brooklyn

New York City Mayor Eric Adams faced sharp criticism during a visit to the predominantly Orthodox Jewish neighborhood of Borough Park in Brooklyn. Adams had gone to Eichler's store ahead of Rosh Hashanah, intending to engage with the Jewish community and offer holiday greetings, according to Maariv. However, the visit quickly turned confrontational.

Jewish activist and blogger Stephanie Bension-Shimol, a granddaughter of Holocaust survivors, publicly challenged Adams. She accused the mayor of hypocrisy regarding his stance on Israel and criticized his efforts to combat antisemitism. "You have the audacity to come here," Bension-Shimol stated, urging Adams to use his position to fight antisemitism and arguing that his actions concerning Israel exacerbate negative sentiments towards Jews.

Despite the tense exchange, Adams maintained composure. Earlier in the visit, he was filmed receiving a jar of honey and a shofar, wishing residents a happy new year and expressing pleasure at being in the neighborhood before the holiday.

After security and store staff escorted Bension-Shimol out of the store, she continued to follow Adams's delegation outside, questioning accompanying Jewish individuals about the mayor's views on Israel and their reasons for supporting his visit. She later displayed Israeli flags, voicing support for Israel, Donald Trump, and Benjamin Netanyahu, and encouraged others to join her.

This incident follows a previous controversy involving Adams before the anniversary of September 11th, where he was reportedly criticized by an individual described as antisemitic, with growing opposition to his presence at the commemoration.
