New York Jewish Bookstore Owner Responds to Outrage Over Hosting Anti-Israel Mayor

The Judaica bookstore 'Eichlers' in Brooklyn's Borough Park is facing backlash from the local Jewish community after hosting New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who has been described as anti-Israel. Adams visited the Hasidic neighborhood ahead of Rosh Hashanah, where he was reportedly received with honors and given gifts.

A viral video filmed by a protester inside the bookstore showed her confronting Adams, community activists, and the store owners, accusing them of hosting an individual many Jews consider antisemitic. The video sparked outrage online, with calls for boycotting the popular store.

In response, the store's owner released a video statement clarifying his position. He stated that he did not invite Adams and that his store has a policy of welcoming all public officials and candidates for office for the past 40 years, without taking political sides. He emphasized that the store has hosted numerous politicians over the decades.

The owner further explained that the viral videos did not involve his staff and that the footage showed external individuals, influencers, and promoters who were not affiliated with Eichlers. He asserted that no Eichlers staff participated in gift-giving or welcoming ceremonies.

He added that the store would abide by any directive from rabbis or community organizations like Agudath Israel regarding hosting specific individuals. The owner concluded by stating that the store supports the State of Israel.
