Jewish Activist Confronts NYC Mayor Adams Over Rising Antisemitism

New York City Mayor Eric Adams faced a heated confrontation during a visit to a Judaica store in the Boro Park neighborhood of Brooklyn on Wednesday. Stephanie Ben-Simon, a Jewish woman and granddaughter of Holocaust survivors, directly challenged Adams, accusing him of fueling antisemitism in the city. She confronted him inside Eichler's Judaica store, stating, "It's all because of you we have so much antisemitism…You have such chutzpah for coming here." Ben-Simon highlighted that Boro Park is where her family settled after the Holocaust and urged the mayor to act decisively against anti-Jewish hatred. She specifically blamed his focus on Israel for directly impacting the security of the Jewish community in New York.

Security personnel and bystanders attempted to remove Ben-Simon from the store. Reports indicate she was escorted out while Adams was led away by his security detail. He did not publicly respond to her accusations during the incident. The confrontation occurred amidst significant criticism from the Jewish community regarding Adams's stances and amid rising hate crimes in New York City, with police data showing over half of reported incidents targeting Jewish people.

Adams was visiting Boro Park ahead of Rosh Hashanah, meeting with community representatives and touring the store. During his visit, he was presented with honey for the holiday, and a demonstration of shofar blowing was given.
