New York Mayor Adams Faces Rising Criticism Over Israel Stance and Economic Policies

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who took office about six months ago, is facing increasing criticism from residents over his economic policies, stance on Israel, and relations with the Jewish community. According to a Wall Street Journal report, criticisms focus on his rhetoric against Israel, his approach to the business sector, and difficulties implementing a promised tax reform. A city court temporarily halted the new tax on luxury homeowners after residents filed a lawsuit citing implementation flaws. Former U.S. President Donald Trump, who has significant real estate investments in New York, called the city's economic move a "dangerous political experiment" and announced the federal government is considering legal action to block the tax.

A recent Siena poll shows public support for Mamdani declining, with 44% of eligible voters holding a negative view of him. However, his overall approval rating remains at 47%, and among likely voters, he retains 69% support. Meanwhile, Mamdani's ongoing anti-Israel rhetoric has deeply concerned Jewish community leaders. Tensions escalated after the mayor posted a video urging federal authorities to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, labeling him a war criminal. Rabbi Amiel Hirsch, president of the New York Board of Rabbis, described relations with the city administration as having "deteriorated drastically" since Mamdani took office.

Mamdani met with a group of rabbis to address their concerns and pledged to combat antisemitism in the city. Nonetheless, he did not retract provocative statements, including calls to "globalize the intifada." His office stated the administration is working to strengthen the economy, reduce crime rates, and expand services for residents.
