A significant urban renewal project has officially commenced in Jerusalem's Neve Yaakov neighborhood with the demolition of an existing complex at 28-32 Neve Yaakov. This marks one of the largest urban renewal initiatives in the city and the most substantial to date in its Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) communities. The demolition follows the relocation of 111 families, making way for a new complex that will feature over 500 housing units.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion, Deputy Mayor Ofer Avivi, Director of the National Urban Renewal Authority Uri Gendelman, City Engineer Yoel Even, and representatives from the municipality, planning bodies, and the development companies, Trа Real Estate and Rotstein. The project involved extensive consultation with residents, community rabbis, and professionals to address the unique characteristics and needs of the neighborhood.
In addition to the new residences, the project includes the construction of seven kindergartens, two synagogues, a commercial strip, and enhanced public spaces. The 111 original homeowners will receive upgraded, larger apartments equipped with safe rooms and balconies, along with private parking and storage. The development aims to significantly improve the quality of life for both existing and new residents, creating a more modern, secure, and accessible living environment.
The complex's location near the Neve Yaakov light rail line provides convenient access to Jerusalem's employment, commercial, and service centers. Mayor Lion emphasized that urban renewal is about social justice, providing safe homes and better quality of life, enabling younger generations to build their future in Jerusalem. Trа Real Estate executives highlighted the project's success as a testament to professional work, listening to residents' needs, and effective collaboration, noting their extensive involvement in other projects across the city. Rotstein executives underscored the project's importance in adapting established neighborhoods for future generations while preserving the existing community and enhancing living standards.
