Israel's new school year commenced Tuesday with approximately 2.6 million students returning to classrooms, despite a significant shortage of teachers. While no strikes threatened the opening, the education system faces ongoing challenges, including the return of students from northern border communities and the Gaza periphery, areas heavily impacted by the ongoing conflict. Schools in Metula, Israel's northernmost town, reopened for the first time since the war began.

Education Minister Yoav Kisch hailed the opening as a "day of celebration" for the education system and the country, thanking educators for their dedication during wartime conditions. He criticized media portrayals that he believes undermine the professionalism of teachers and stated that political disputes should not be waged at the expense of the education system. Kisch expressed hope for a year of peace, security, learning, and growth.

The Ministry of Education invested over a billion shekels in summer educational programs for over 1.1 million students, aiming to maintain educational continuity. The new school year's philosophy emphasizes belonging, security, identity, roots, and equipping students with tools for a changing world.

Meir Shimoni, Director-General of the Ministry of Education, acknowledged the extensive work involved in preparing for the school year and pledged continued support for educators and students. The ministry has also expanded operating hours for its parent and educator support hotline.
