Despite the ongoing security challenges in Kiryat Shmona since the outbreak of the war, the "Ohrut Danziger" school has seen a remarkable return of students and staff, nearly matching pre-war enrollment numbers. School principal Ofer Zafrani, an alumnus himself, is leading the educational community through this complex period, expressing hope for sustained routine.
The school's resilience is particularly evident in the dedication of its students and their families. Dozens of families, some no longer residing in the city or having evacuated to distances of an hour or more, are committed to maintaining their children's educational and social continuity at Danziger. Each morning, students undertake journeys, either via private transport or public transit, to attend classes.
"Even families who have left the city up to an hour away, your friends did not give up on being students here at Danziger," Zafrani stated. "They come every morning, whether with their parents or using public transportation. When you look from above and see the white shirts on this special day, you understand the magnitude of the excitement."
The school grounds are well-maintained, featuring green lawns and an invested garden. The teachers' lounge is designed to high standards, reminiscent of tech companies. Concurrently, security measures are being enhanced with the construction of enlarged protected spaces, intended for dual use as innovative learning environments and shelters.
While Danziger High School shows encouraging figures, the broader educational landscape in Kiryat Shmona is more challenging. Approximately 1,000 students, out of a pre-war total of 5,500, are no longer attending school, highlighting the significant demographic and social impact of the prolonged security situation.
