Security Heightened for Central Elections Committee Chair Noam Sofer

Security measures surrounding the chairman of Israel's Central Elections Committee, Supreme Court Justice Noam Sofer, have been significantly increased in anticipation of the upcoming elections. The decision to bolster his security was made approximately two weeks ago, with implementation beginning in recent days following a directive from the Israel Police. Official statements from the Elections Committee confirmed that Sofer is secured according to security needs and police guidelines, declining to provide further details.

Sofer, who also serves as the Vice President of the Supreme Court, has been at the center of several controversial decisions regarding the management of the election process in recent weeks. This heightened security comes amid broader discussions about the protection of political figures, particularly those not currently serving as Knesset members.

Last week, Sofer contacted the National Security Council director, Samuel Ben Ezra, to address the security arrangements for non-Knesset party leaders. This initiative was prompted by concerns raised regarding the security of Yisrael Beiteinu chairman Gadi Eisenkot and Democratic Party chairman Yair Golan. Sofer sought clarification on which authority determines if an individual is considered threatened, who is responsible for their security, and the criteria for such protection during the election period.

Reports also emerged today that the advisory committee for personal security recommended granting Eisenkot Shin Bet security protection until the elections. This recommendation reportedly contrasts with an earlier stance by the head of the Shin Bet, David Zini. The final decision on this matter rests with the ministerial committee for Shin Bet affairs.
