Two infants born at home were recently hospitalized in critical condition at Hadassah Mount Scopus Medical Center in Jerusalem due to severe complications. The first case involved a newborn boy, born at home two weeks ago, who was rushed to the hospital just an hour after birth suffering from asphyxia, a lack of oxygen to the brain. His parents noticed his distress and called emergency services. Doctors diagnosed respiratory distress, bluish skin, and an abnormal neurological state. He was placed on a brain wave monitor, which indicated seizures, leading to therapeutic cooling to prevent further brain damage. The infant's condition has since stabilized, and he remains under care in the neonatal intensive care unit.
In the second incident, occurring ten days ago, a baby girl born at home was brought to the hospital's emergency room three days after birth due to significant bleeding observed in her diaper. Pediatricians identified the infant as being in shock, suffering from severe acidosis and critically low hemoglobin levels. She was transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit for further treatment.
Medical staff discovered the baby had a severe Vitamin K deficiency, a condition that prevents dangerous bleeding. This deficiency was attributed to the parents' decision not to administer the vitamin, which is routinely given to newborns in Israel and worldwide to prevent such hemorrhaging. The medical team administered Vitamin K and blood products, successfully stopping the bleeding and saving the infant's life. This case was described as one of the most severe the unit had treated related to Vitamin K deficiency. The baby girl has since recovered and been released from the hospital.
