Three infants were recently hospitalized in serious condition following complications from home births. Two babies were taken to Hadassah Mount Scopus Medical Center in Jerusalem, and one to Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon. One infant required resuscitation, another suffered from a lack of blood supply to the brain and underwent therapeutic cooling to prevent brain damage, and a third experienced shock due to postpartum bleeding.

Medical teams at both hospitals stabilized the infants, who are now in stable condition. In one case, a baby born at home was rushed to Hadassah about an hour after birth when parents noticed severe distress. Hospital staff identified respiratory distress, a bluish skin tone, and an abnormal neurological state, leading to admission to the neonatal intensive care unit and therapeutic cooling to prevent secondary brain damage. Professor Smadar Even-Tov, head of neonatology at Hadassah, was on call and supervised the treatment.

In another incident, a three-day-old infant born at home was brought to Hadassah with significant bleeding. Doctors diagnosed shock, severe acidosis, and critically low hemoglobin levels. Tests revealed a Vitamin K deficiency, a supplement not administered after birth due to parental decision, which is crucial for preventing life-threatening bleeding. Professor Even-Tov emphasized that immediate hospital assessment and intervention could have mitigated risks.

The Ministry of Health recommends hospital births but does not prohibit home births in Israel. These recent cases highlight the risks of unexpected complications during and after home births and the critical importance of immediate medical access for newborns experiencing deterioration.
