Tesla Driver Filmed Sleeping at Wheel Investigated by Police

The story · English

A 36-year-old Tesla driver from Migdal HaEmek, who was filmed allegedly sleeping while driving, was questioned by police on Monday and released. The video, which circulated online, prompted an investigation by the Traffic Division's central unit. The footage appears to show the driver reclined in his seat, seemingly without control of the steering wheel.

The driver was identified and summoned for questioning. He was investigated on suspicion of reckless driving, operating a vehicle in a manner that prevents full control, and not holding the steering wheel with both hands. He was released after the interrogation.

Police stated that the investigation is ongoing and its findings will be transferred to the prosecution department. The Traffic Division emphasized that driving assistance systems are not a substitute for the driver and that responsibility for the road remains with the person behind the wheel at all times. They further stressed that autonomous driving is not applicable or legal in Israel, and that advanced safety and assistance systems do not replace the driver or absolve them of responsibility. According to police, driving requires constant alertness and full control of the vehicle.
