Israeli Police Investigate Tesla Driver Sleeping While Autopilot Engaged

Israeli police are investigating a video circulating on social media showing a driver asleep behind the wheel of a Tesla on a highway, with the vehicle's autopilot system engaged. The footage, captured by another motorist, depicts the car driving itself, stopping at red lights, accelerating on green, and maintaining the speed limit.

"The car is driving itself. The driver is asleep. Incredible," the video's author is heard saying. The Israeli police have stated that traffic police specialists are examining the recording. They emphasized that such a situation poses a significant danger to other road users.

Police reminded drivers that the law requires them to keep both hands on the wheel and remain attentive at all times, even in vehicles equipped with advanced driver-assistance systems. Many modern cars, including Teslas, feature intelligent cruise control and automatic steering functions designed to maintain speed and lane position.

It was clarified that the autopilot mode in Teslas is distinct from full autonomous driving, which is not yet available in Israel. The police are reminding the public of traffic regulations in light of this incident.
