In 1992, businessman Yaakov Shahar acquired full ownership of the Maccabi Haifa football club, transitioning it from a volunteer-run association to a private enterprise. • Yaakov Shahar bought Maccabi Haifa FC in 1992, changing Israeli football.
  • The club was heavily indebted to tax authorities.
  • Shahar negotiated a debt reduction and demanded ownership.
  • The sports association approved the sale after player strike.
  • Shahar's ownership led to significant on-field success.

In 1992, a landmark deal transformed Israeli football when Yaakov Shahar, an auto importer, transitioned from sponsor to owner of the Maccabi Haifa soccer club. The club was transferred from the volunteer-run Maccabi Haifa Carmel sports association to Keshur Sport Ltd., a company owned by the Meir Group. This move was unprecedented in Israeli football, with the association seeking to settle significant debts and Shahar aiming to manage the club with his business acumen and principles.

Shahar, born in 1941, had a background in football, playing in his youth and later joining the family business, which he co-led with his brother-in-law Israel Kaz. The Meir Group, established in 1967, was a major importer of Volvo vehicles. Despite Shahar's substantial financial support to Maccabi Haifa in the 1991-92 season, the club's debts ballooned to approximately 8.5 million shekels, far exceeding its projected income of 5.87 million shekels. The primary issue was the club's failure to remit required taxes, leading to mounting interest and penalties.

Shahar intervened, negotiating with the tax authorities on behalf of the club. He agreed to pay 2.5 million shekels of the reduced debt, with the condition that the club would meet its future obligations. In return, Shahar demanded full ownership of the football club. This proposal was initially met with resistance from the sports association's chairman, Dani Asnin, but Shahar insisted, viewing it as a necessary step to ensure the club's survival and success.

After extensive discussions and a period of uncertainty, including a player strike over unpaid bonuses, the Maccabi Haifa sports council voted on May 3, 1992, to transfer the football club to Shahar's Keshur Sport Ltd. This marked the first time a major Israeli sports club transitioned from a volunteer-run association to private ownership. Shahar immediately assumed control of all aspects of the club, including professional staff appointments, player selection, and budget management.

Under Shahar's ownership, Maccabi Haifa experienced significant success. The club won the State Cup in its first season and achieved an undefeated league championship in its second, also reaching the quarterfinals of the European Cup Winners' Cup. By February 1995, Keshur Sport had loaned the association 3.7 million shekels to cover player acquisitions, and the association ultimately relinquished full control of the club to Shahar's company on June 30, 1995, solidifying his transformative impact on Israeli football.
