Severe Storm Disrupts Israel's Water Supply, Leading to Rationing

A severe storm that battered Israel in recent days has caused a significant water crisis, forcing the temporary shutdown of private desalination plants due to extreme turbidity in seawater. This critical disruption to water production has compelled the Water Authority to implement an unusual measure: immediately reducing the supply of fresh water allocated for agriculture in the southern region.

The storm's impact extended beyond heavy rain and strong winds, creating deep turbidity that severely hampers the desalination process and necessitates plant shutdowns until conditions improve. Consequently, several private desalination facilities have ceased operations, creating a substantial deficit in the national water supply.

To prioritize the needs of the population over agricultural demands, the Water Authority made an urgent decision to cut back on freshwater for southern agriculture. This move aims to ensure that the water sector can continue to meet the basic needs of citizens, even at the cost of impacting the agricultural industry.

In response, Mekorot, the national water company, has entered a state of high alert, increasing production from all available sources to compensate for the shortfall. Professional teams are closely monitoring the situation and seeking innovative solutions to manage the crisis.

The crisis escalated significantly between Saturday night and Sunday morning when water production from all desalination plants south of Hadera was completely halted. This has led to a drastic reduction in water supply nationwide, with the southern region and Jerusalem experiencing the most severe impacts. Mekorot continues to supply water to Jerusalem, but at a reduced rate, causing deep concern among decision-makers.

The system is currently relying solely on urban reservoirs, which are depleting rapidly. In anticipation of a widespread supply crisis, the Jerusalem Municipality is preparing emergency measures, including the establishment of regulated water distribution points in several key neighborhoods. This preparation is being coordinated with municipal departments and officials to ensure timely resident updates and effective responses before the reservoirs are completely emptied.
