  • Shelly Yachimovich detailed her early pancreatic cancer diagnosis.
  • Symptoms included pain from a tumor blocking bile ducts.
  • The tumor was surgically removed eight months ago.
  • She is undergoing chemotherapy to prevent recurrence.
  • A new drug for metastatic cancer is not applicable to her.

Israeli journalist and former politician Shelly Yachimovich has shared further details about her battle with pancreatic cancer, explaining how the disease was detected relatively early. She revealed that the tumor was located between her pancreas and bile ducts, causing a partial blockage, inflammation, and abdominal pain. These symptoms prompted her to seek medical attention, leading to an ultrasound and a subsequent CT scan that identified the growth.

Yachimovich described the moment a surgeon informed her, "We also identified a tumor process in the pancreas," and confirmed her suspicion that it likely meant cancer. She emphasized that her case differs from many pancreatic cancer patients, as the disease is often fatal due to its typically asymptomatic early stages. In her situation, the blockage and pain served as early warning signs before the cancer could metastasize.

The journalist disclosed that she was diagnosed approximately eight months ago. The tumor has since been surgically removed, and three follow-up CT scans have shown no signs of recurrence. Despite this, she is undergoing chemotherapy every two weeks to minimize the risk of the cancer returning.

Responding to public interest, Yachimovich expressed gratitude for the overwhelming empathy and support she has received. She also addressed the recent approval of a new drug for metastatic pancreatic cancer in the United States, clarifying that it is not applicable to her current condition as the tumor has been removed and there are no metastases. "I hope that in the future I will not need it either," she wrote.
