Former Israeli journalist and Knesset member Shelly Yachimovich has expressed gratitude for the outpouring of public support following her revelation of a battle with pancreatic cancer. Yachimovich, now a journalist for Kan News, described the response as a "tsunami of empathy, concern, offers of help, encouragement, and simple kindness." She apologized for being unable to respond personally to everyone, stating she would address common questions instead.

Yachimovich clarified that while she is aware of new cancer drugs, they are not currently relevant to her situation. She confirmed that her tumor was surgically removed and there are no metastases, expressing hope this will remain the case. Regarding early detection, she explained her case was unusual, with the tumor incidentally blocking the bile duct, causing inflammation and abdominal pain that led to her diagnosis.

She detailed the diagnostic process, which began with a clinic visit, leading to an emergency room assessment, an ultrasound, and a CT scan that revealed the pancreatic tumor. Yachimovich shared her initial reaction, a mix of shock and dark humor, asking her daughter for sedatives and receiving a full dose from a nurse.

Yachimovich emphasized that her situation is rare, as pancreatic cancer often presents no symptoms until advanced stages. She noted the absence of routine screening tests for early detection, unlike other cancer types. Finally, responding to numerous requests for prayer, she shared her full Hebrew name for blessings: Shelly Rachel, daughter of Hannah Rivka.

Last week, Yachimovich disclosed her pancreatic cancer diagnosis from eight months prior, revealing she had undergone surgery and was receiving chemotherapy. She reported that recent tests are encouraging, showing no recurrence of the removed tumor for three consecutive CT scans.
