Former Israeli Premier League Star Christian Martinez Leads Slovan Bratislava to Champions League Group Stage

Christian Martinez, a Panamanian midfielder who previously starred for Israeli Premier League club Ironi Kiryat Shmona, played a pivotal role in Slovan Bratislava's historic qualification to the UEFA Champions League group stage. On Wednesday, Martinez scored a dramatic winning goal in the 100th minute during extra time, securing Slovan Bratislava's second-ever entry into the prestigious European competition after eliminating Slovenian side Celje.

The Slovak club, coached by football legend Yaya Touré, celebrated this major achievement which also brings a financial windfall of approximately 18 million euros in prize money and additional revenue from upcoming matches against Europe's elite teams. Touré made history as the first African coach to lead a team from the qualifying rounds into the Champions League group stage.

Martinez, 29, impressed Israeli football fans during his two seasons at Ironi Kiryat Shmona, where he made 62 appearances and was considered one of the club's top foreign players. Although a transfer to Beitar Jerusalem fell through last summer due to financial disagreements, his standout performances at the 2026 World Cup elevated his profile. He became the first player from the Israeli Premier League to be named Man of the Match at a World Cup game despite Panama's 1-0 loss to Croatia.

Following the World Cup, Slovak scouts quickly signed Martinez for a reported fee of around 800,000 euros. As Slovan Bratislava prepares for Thursday's group stage draw, Israeli football can take pride in Martinez's rise to the global stage. Meanwhile, Israeli club Hapoel Be'er Sheva, eliminated by Sabah, will miss out on the draw and must look forward to future European opportunities.
