Christian Martinez Propels Slovan Bratislava to Champions League Group Stage

Christian Martinez, a former Hapoel Kiryat Shmona player, scored a decisive goal in the 100th minute to secure Slovan Bratislava's qualification for the UEFA Champions League group stage. The Slovakian club defeated Zilina 3-2 on aggregate after a 1-1 draw in the first leg and a thrilling second leg at Zilina's home ground in Zilina, Slovakia. Martinez, who transferred to Slovan Bratislava for approximately 700,000 euros following a strong World Cup performance where he was named man of the match against Croatia, has been a key player since joining the team.

In the second leg, Andreas Sporar opened the scoring for Bratislava in the 18th minute, assisted by Kenan Bjaric. Zilina equalized with a penalty converted by Savit Seslar in the 34th minute, leading to extra time. Martinez's winning goal came after a brilliant assist from Nino Marseli. Bratislava dominated the match with seven shots on target compared to Zilina's six, earning a Champions League bonus of 18.62 million euros.

This marks Slovan Bratislava's second appearance in the Champions League group stage, having previously competed in the 2024/25 season where they lost all their matches with a goal difference of 7-27. Martinez has started every game since his arrival, contributing both goals and assists, including a previous goal against Hapoel Haifa in January. Zilina, despite their efforts, were eliminated with a heavy heart.
