Israeli Reservist Beats Cancer and Returns to Active Duty with Partner's Support

Ya’ir Kakon, an Israeli reservist soldier, was diagnosed with lymphoma during his military service in Gaza after experiencing unusual symptoms. The cancer, located near his throat, abruptly shifted his life from frontline combat to intensive chemotherapy treatments in the hospital. Throughout this challenging period, Kakon was supported unwaveringly by his partner, Hila Dari, who stayed by his side from the very beginning despite their short relationship. Kakon recalls, "When you have someone by your side, it’s an automatic victory."

Dari maintained optimism and connection during his hospital stay, even insisting on observing the traditional Friday Kiddush together, which symbolized their joint strength. After completing the demanding treatment, Kakon was declared fully recovered. Determined to resume his life, he returned to active reserve duty alongside his unit and resumed his university studies.

Beyond his military and academic comeback, Kakon transformed his experiences, from combat in Gaza through his cancer battle and recovery, into a moving musical composition.
