OpenAI Restores Five-Hour Daily Limit for ChatGPT Plus Users on Work and Codex Services

OpenAI has reinstated a five-hour daily usage limit for ChatGPT Plus subscribers using the ChatGPT Work and Codex services. This change comes after several weeks of nearly unrestricted access and aims to help users better manage their weekly usage quotas. The decision, announced by Thibault Sotiau, head of engineering for Codex and ChatGPT, is driven by two main factors: the need to balance computational loads to maintain system stability and to prevent users from unintentionally exhausting their weekly quotas too quickly, which had caused confusion and a poor user experience.

Once users reach the five-hour daily limit or their weekly quota, they must wait for the next cycle reset or purchase additional credits. Occasionally, OpenAI offers free quota resets through promotions or referral programs, but generally, users will need to moderate their usage. The limit encourages more strategic use of AI tools throughout the week.

Higher-tier Pro subscribers are exempt from this restriction for the coming months, as are enterprise and educational users who operate under separate credit systems unaffected by the new limit. The reinstated cap requires ChatGPT Plus users to monitor their usage carefully to avoid interruptions during critical tasks.
