Jerusalem Expands Light Rail Network with New Line Connecting to Malha

Jerusalem is advancing its light rail system from a single line to a multi-line network, with the new L3 line already operational and the L4 line entering testing phases. The L3 line, which began commercial service on August 21, 2026, connects the Tzurim station on Jaffa Street to Malha, spanning approximately 7 kilometers and including 13 stations. This line links key city areas such as government buildings, educational campuses, cultural and sports venues, and residential neighborhoods like Givat Mordechai, Pat, Gonenim, and Malha.

The upcoming L4 line will connect the Gonenim area to the Gilo neighborhood, with test runs set to start soon. These tests will evaluate operational, service, and safety systems to meet regulatory standards before the line opens for public use. The expansion is part of the "Green Route Project," which also plans to extend service to the Mount Scopus area.

The project is a public-private partnership involving the Ministry of Transportation, Ministry of Finance, Jerusalem Municipality, the "Transportation for Jerusalem" authority, and the private company Kafrir, which includes Shapir and KAF. The new network will improve connectivity within Jerusalem and facilitate transfers between light rail, Israel Railways, and bus lines. Future plans include a park-and-ride facility near Highway 16 to encourage public transport use for commuters entering the city.

This development marks a significant shift in Jerusalem's public transportation, moving from reliance on a single light rail line to a comprehensive network, enhancing accessibility and convenience for residents and visitors alike.
