Young Pilot Executes Emergency Landing After Bird Shatters Cockpit Window Mid-Flight

During his second solo flight in a light aircraft, 22-year-old pilot Hagai Dayan faced a dramatic emergency when a pigeon collided forcefully with the cockpit windshield, shattering it completely. The impact caused severe facial injuries and cuts to Dayan, while shards of glass and a 160 km/h gust of wind rushed into the cockpit, blurring his vision with blood and creating an immediate life-threatening situation.

Despite the extreme conditions of impaired sight and freezing, strong wind, Dayan overcame fear and panic to focus fully on the emergency protocol. He explained that he understood the need to act according to training and procedures, deciding to execute an emergency landing. His quick, precise response enabled him to safely land the light aircraft on the runway, concluding the incident within minutes and saving his life.

Dayan credited his mental resilience and prior life challenges for helping him maintain composure during the crisis. In an interview on the program "HaOlam HaBoker," he reflected, "I am sure what saved me was the coping and experiences we went through," highlighting how his personal strength was crucial in preventing panic and ensuring survival.
