New Arthritis Drug Shows Promise in Treating Autoimmune Hair Loss

A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine reveals a breakthrough treatment for hair loss caused by the autoimmune disease alopecia areata. Originally developed to treat rheumatoid arthritis, the drug was found to have a side effect that promotes hair regrowth in patients suffering from this specific type of hair loss. Professor Eitan Friedman, head of the Genetic Institute for Early Detection at Assuta Ramat Hahayal, explained in an interview with HaOlam HaBoker that the drug targets the same biological mechanism involved in both rheumatoid arthritis and alopecia areata.

The research is a follow-up study demonstrating that the hair regrowth effect is sustained for up to three years and is safe in terms of side effects. However, the treatment is effective only for hair loss linked to the autoimmune condition alopecia areata and not for other types of baldness. Despite this limitation, the discovery offers significant new hope for patients struggling with this form of hair loss.
