Ben Gurion Airport Authority and Workers Unite to Prevent Another Operational Crisis

Three days after severe disruptions at Ben Gurion Airport caused chaos during one of the busiest travel days of the year, the Israel Airports Authority and the airport workers' union held a joint meeting on Sunday to address ongoing operational challenges and prevent future crises. The meeting came amid unresolved disputes over responsibility for the disruptions, which involved significant delays in baggage handling and passenger processing.

Union chairman Pinchas Idan denied that a strike had occurred, attributing the breakdown to worker exhaustion and severe staff shortages, particularly among baggage handlers and porters. Meanwhile, the Airports Authority continues to manage the fallout and prepare for the upcoming busy period at the end of August and the approaching Jewish High Holidays.

Following the discussions, both sides agreed on immediate measures to reduce congestion and restore normal operations. These include resuming full operational services in baggage handling, security, and ground operations without any work slowdowns. Additionally, management and headquarters staff will join frontline shifts, focusing on baggage and queue management to alleviate pressure.

The baggage handling issues were a central factor in the recent disruptions, with many passengers experiencing long waits or traveling without their luggage. The Authority is also recruiting new employees as part of early preparations for the anticipated holiday travel surge.

Both the union and management emphasized their commitment to working together to quickly return airport operations to normal and minimize passenger impact.
