Asuta Hospital Investigates Fertility Mix-Up After Baby Born from Different Man’s Sperm

A woman who underwent fertility treatments at Asuta Hospital in Ramat Hahayal discovered a genetic mismatch between her two children, raising suspicions that they were not fathered by the same man as intended. A private genetic test conducted abroad indicated a possible discrepancy in the sperm donor’s identity. Asuta promptly reported the case to the Israeli Ministry of Health, which has launched an investigation into the circumstances, including verifying the private test and the laboratory that performed it.

Asuta emphasized that the inquiry is in its early stages and no definitive conclusions have been reached. The hospital is maintaining direct communication with the patient and coordinating transparently with the Ministry of Health. The ministry confirmed it is reviewing all details and working with Asuta to professionally assess the situation.

This incident revives concerns about the oversight and documentation processes in fertility treatments at Asuta, following previous cases. Notably, in September 2022, a similar scandal emerged when a fertilized embryo implanted in a patient at Asuta Rishon Lezion was found not to genetically match the couple, prompting extensive public and legal scrutiny. Asuta’s fertility unit in Ramat Hahayal has also faced prior investigations over genetic mismatches.

The key question remains whether the private genetic test abroad will be validated as part of the official inquiry. Only after completing all examinations will authorities determine if a sperm donation error occurred, how it happened, and at what stage.
