Israeli Tech Entrepreneur Maor Shlomo Sells Solo Startup Base 44 for $80 Million

Maor Shlomo, an Israeli tech entrepreneur, achieved a remarkable personal exit of $80 million within just six months by single-handedly developing the startup Base 44. The company, acquired by Wix in June 2025, offers a platform that enables users to create software, websites, games, and tools through natural language descriptions without requiring technical skills. Shlomo, who remained the sole employee during the rapid growth, launched Base 44 after completing 400 days of military reserve service and initially intended it as a fun side project.

The startup quickly gained traction, reaching $1 million in revenue within three weeks of launch and attracting millions of users worldwide. Despite the success, Shlomo endured intense pressure, often going months without sleep to ensure system stability, motivated by user stories about how Base 44 helped them build businesses or manage projects.

Shlomo's journey is marked by his unconventional path: a Haifa native with ADHD who struggled academically and never completed his degree at the Technion. He previously founded Explorium, which raised $127 million and reached a $500 million valuation. His success stems from determination, hard work, and authenticity, values instilled by his parents who worked in high-tech.

The past year was personally challenging as Shlomo's mother battled lung cancer and passed away shortly after witnessing his wedding. This loss inspired him to establish a cancer research fund, aiming to leverage AI to combat the disease.

The $80 million acquisition by Wix has since grown to over $150 million in value. Shlomo emphasizes that financial gain was not his primary goal; he sought global scale and collaboration with experienced teams. He remains optimistic about AI's role in transforming industries and advises young people to prioritize practical experience over formal degrees. Looking ahead, Shlomo hopes to impact cancer research, continue Base 44's growth, and focus on family life.
