Likud Minister Nir Barkat Denies Attempt to Oust Netanyahu Amid Internal Party Turmoil

Likud Minister Nir Barkat has recently faced intense internal criticism following reports that he attempted to remove Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu immediately after the October 7 attacks. In a Friday morning interview on Kan Reshet Bet, Barkat emotionally stated, "They are trying to destroy me, harm me personally, and create chaos within Likud. I am loyal to the Prime Minister, have always supported him, and stand by him today. I believe he is the most suitable to lead the country."

The previous evening, Barkat addressed the rumors for the first time, denying any attempt to oust Netanyahu but acknowledging disagreements over security issues in the days following October 7. These disputes mainly involved former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant's positions, particularly regarding the entry of Palestinian workers into areas within the Green Line and the lack of a decisive response on the northern border.

Barkat said he urged Netanyahu to resolve these disagreements, as is expected of a minister during wartime. He also noted a significant shift in decision-making processes and a more aggressive policy stance since members of the 'State Camp' faction left the security cabinet. Barkat emphasized that previous criticisms have now been replaced by full support for the current leadership line, firmly denying any effort to depose Netanyahu. Meanwhile, another Likud MK has withdrawn from the party primaries amid the ongoing tensions.
